November 22, 1900: First Test of the Mercedes

The history of the Mercedes brand began thanks to Emil Jellinek, an official Daimler vehicle dealer and racing enthusiast. Initially, Daimler sold cars under his own name.

Jellinek bought Daimler vehicles, successfully raced them, and then sold them to his affluent acquaintances. His importance to Daimler was so significant that the company agreed to build a special racing vehicle for him. At Jellinek's request, the car was named Mercedes, in honour of his daughter.

The Mercedes prototype was first tested on November 22, 1900. It made its motorsport debut in March 1901 at the races in Nice, where the 35-horsepower Mercedes achieved a spectacular victory in the Nice – Salon – Nice race.

Daimler officially registered the Mercedes-Benz trademark in 1902.
